The 4 C's: Cut, Clarity, Caratage and Color characterize a diamond:

Cut: The cut of a diamond refers to its proportions. Of the 4 C's the cut is the only aspect that is directly influenced by man. The other three are dictated by nature. A diamond's ability to reflect light determines it's display of fire and brilliance. Diamonds are usually cut with 58 facets. These facets follow a mathematical formula and are placed at precise angles in relation to each other to maximize the amount of light reflected.

Clarity: To determine a diamond's clarity, an expert views it under a 10x magnification. The higher the clarity of the diamond, the more valuable it is. However, a higher quality does not improve the appearance of a diamond but rather the price and rarity.

Carat: The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats. One carat is divided into 100 points. A diamond weighing one quarter of a carat can also be described as weighing 25 points or 0.25 carats (1 carat=0.2 grams)

Color: The best color for a diamond is no color at all. Diamonds allow light to be reflected and dispersed as a rainbow of color. The absolute finest colorless stone carries a rating of D descending through each letter of the alphabet upto Z.
